For the longest time, people thought that the gaming business is all about the rich throwing away their money in fancy VIP casino rooms and chandelier-lit hotels like there’s no tomorrow.
But as the years passed, gaming has become a vehicle for tourism and economic development of progressive countries in the world like the US, Australia, Singapore and Macau. Where there is gaming, there are jobs generated and booming economic activity.
In the Philippines, the state-owned Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) is not only instrumental in spurring economic growth through higher tourist influx and enhanced economic activity. PAGCOR is also the government’s staunch partner in reaching out to the less-privileged sectors of society.
Besides its contributions to the national government and other mandated beneficiaries, PAGCOR strives to touch the lives of more Filipinos by putting corporate social responsibility at the core of the organization’s existence. Here’s a sneak peek of how the state-run gaming firm brings basic social services closer to the Filipino masses:
Health services and relief missions
PAGCOR partners with various government and non-government agencies in delivering basic services to marginalized communities through service and medical mission caravans and provision of medical supplies to low-income households.
The Corporation also provides immediate response to victims of calamity and natural disasters. When the locals of Iligan City and Cagayan de Oro lost their homes and loved ones to flash floods in December last year, PAGCOR Chairman and CEO Cristino Naguiat, Jr. immediately ordered the release of a P2 million financial aid for the victims. Similarly, the state-owned gaming firm reached out to hundreds of families affected by the landslide in Compostela Valley early this year by providing basic needs like food, medicines and potable water for the victims.
Defeating malnutrition
PAGCOR subsidizes the nutritional needs of underweight children from community-based day care centers and public elementary schools nationwide through a supplemental feeding program, which is conducted in partnership with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and the DepEd.
The program, which has been in place since 2008, has helped thousands of children battling with malnutrition, achieve their ideal weight. Monitoring reports show that from underweight status, a big majority of the recipients gained normal body mass index, after the four-month feeding session.

ILIGAN CITY, July 19 (PIA) - In preparation for the shift to blended learning in the coming school year amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic, the Department of Education (DepED) Iligan City Schools Division has signed an agreement with Iligan Light and Power, Inc. (ILPI) and Southern Cable Vision, Inc. (SCVI) for free internet connectivity.
The project dubbed 'Internet Connectivity: Programa sa Paglaum sa Edukasyon, Kahayag sa Kaugmaon' was formalized during the recent signing of a memorandum of agreement (MOA) between Iligan City Schools Division Superintendent Roy Angelo E. Gazo and ILPI-SCVI President Ralph B. Casiño.
Under the MOA, ILPI and SCVI will provide free internet connectivity and maintenance for one year to 15 public schools of the City Division which will use the online distance learning modality.
These schools are Luinab Elementary School, Tambo Central School, Suarez Central School, Iligan City North Central School, South 1A Central School, Tomas Cabili Elementary School, Tomas Cabili National High School, Doña Juana Actub Lluch Memorial School, Villa Verde Elementary School, Iligan City National High School, Ubaldo Laya Memorial School, Doña Josefa Celdran School, Hinaplanon National High School, and Tambacan Elementary School.
The project, which supports the 'Bayanihan To Heal As One Act', is part of the corporate social responsibility of ILPI and SCVI.
Casiño said they are making their facilities available so that education can continue amidst the pandemic. 'Education cannot stop because of this situation,' he emphasized.
'The growth of ILPI and SCVI is dependent on the development and growth of the city so we can only invest in the long term, and we should be investing in our children because they are the ones who will move us forward,' Casiño added.
Meanwhile, Gazo expressed gratitude to ILPI and SCVI saying the project can benefit DepEd as it can cut the cost of the Division's internet connectivity.

He further cited that they can also reduce or save around Php200 million in the production of printed materials.

According to him, about 10 percent (%) of the students can be served by the online modality. The rest will be using the printed module.
'The production cost of materials needed for modular instruction is around Php2 billion so if we cut it by 10% percent due to the online modality, certainly, we will be reducing or saving around Php200 million because we will no longer be printing materials for the 10% of our students,' he explained.
